..fry survive. If you want babies you must set up? another tank for them to spawn in, then remove the parents as they will eat eggs and fry. The males have stunning ritual battles where they turn brilliant scarlet and face off but never do harm. Cherry barbs are one of the few peaceful barbs. They should never be kept with any aggressive fish. For 3 - 4 females and 2 males you should have 20 gallons as they are very active. They do well with Neons, corydoras and other VERY peaceful fish.

The males will chase and harass the females non-stop until the females are ready to lay eggs. This is why you should have at least 2 - 3 females for every male, to give the girls a rest! Their spawning ritual is quite charming. The? must have bushy plants to spawn in. The male drives the female into the plants where she will release her eggs as she tightly cirles the plant and the male will follow and fertilize them. If you have lots of plants and hiding places in the tank, some eggs may ..con't

Really nice! How often do they actually mate and spawn though? I'm planning to? start a community tank with these guys included and I don't know what to expect with their mating habits..

Men just love the chase. Is that male and female the only two of their kind in the tank? If so getting another female or two will divert the nagging to other females so one isn't always taking the brunt of it. Pretty tank. I miss having neons and cardinals. Even though my silver dollars are? peaceful I still think they'd make meals of them.

I bought her as a mature female, she has had a large and round belly since I got her. I wanted to get some java moss, but none of the pet stores? nearby sell any. So I just have some anubias and another plant whose leaves are smaller, but it is not a fluffy-type plant. The only safe water I can use is $0.35 a gallon and we only have three 3g barrels so I have a 5g tank. When I was researching which fish to get, someone mentioned a tank system with three cherry barbs that worked well...

Mature females can get very big...do you have some fluffy, soft plants in the tank? Cherries need plants to spawn in.? Plants will also help the females find a little refuge from the attentions of the male when they're not in egg-laying mode. How big is your tank? 3 cherries should have at least 10 gallons due to their level of activity.

Oh, thank you for your response! I do have two females, only three barbs due to the size of the tank? :( but the other female is not as healthy and the male is so young-looking that I don't even know if he is mature enough to fertilize eggs...The female has been so large for so long that I am worried she just has internal parasites...

Yes, the males harass the females constantly, trying to get them to lay eggs. You must always have more females than males so each female can get a little rest. If you have a smaller tank and one male, have at least two females. If you have two males have at least? 4 females.

Do you know if it is normal for a young male cherry barb to consistantly? nip at an older and larger female's belly?
